Andreilien (Heyoka) is the first U.S. artist in the A-Z listing for LIB. Andrei Olenev comes from the San Francisco underground first using the moniker HEYOKA. Andrei was using 'traditional' bass as his jump-off but was distinguishing himself from the production pack by doing a great deal of sonic exploration. His extensive tour schedule involves most of the well known electronica fests along with arts festivals such as Burning Man.
Andreilien will be bringing his magical mixture of digital sounds to LIB where they should induce a lot of movement of the bodies that participate in his sets. I think I might swing by if I can just to pick out all the great mash-ups of everything from Eastern Indian influences to Reggae to just totally futuristic elements.
Black 22s are L.A. homeboys J*Labs and Lou E. Bagels. These guys mix up some seriously fun shit. Break, electro, NuReggae and NeFunk and with a few pinches of dubstep. Each DJ has their own aesthetic which they combine into dance music infectious and innovative. They are always striving for the latest and greatest so no two sets are the same.
The second track I listened to, "Strictly Savage" samples Queen in the best way possible. Black 22s definitely rocked me and rolled me and had me moving. I really had to fight to move on to listening to other artists I need to be writing about today. I highly recommend following the directions at the beginning this track-"turn it up really loud. Preferably in a residential area". By the way, you have to either go to their Facebook or Soundcloud as their tracks are not on Spotify.
Blackbird Blackbird complete today's "three" in A-Z and Mikey Maramag is also a Cali artist, another one from the City by the Bay. His Facebook page describes the flavor of his music as "folktronica" and it really is. Being a child of the 60's this has a 21st Century Woodstock sound especially the guitar lines. It truly is a modern throwback to psychedelic pop. I tend to classify my music by season and this is really great Summer music. You could take it for a top-down cruise to the beach or the mountains or have it pumping out of speakers for a surf day followed by a bonfire.
I'd say I'd like to either do my afternoon writing sessions to this music or chilling out after sundown with friends at LIB. This is such mellow music and without being meditation music, something to destress to. Definitely something that will also be on my iPod before during and after Lightning In A Bottle.
As always-Google is your friend. Look up these artists, visit their official sites, Facebooks, Soundclouds and Twitters. And don't forget to bookmark Lightning In A Bottle for all the latest information on the festival. For those of you venturing out to Coachella remember to find DoLab and Lucent Dossier.

A-Z of the Lightning In A Bottle Line Up-A.Skillz, Aaron Snapes & Acid Pauli
A. Skillz mixes up some rap, funk and break beat and your head starts bopping the minute the first track hits your ears. It was fun to listen to a few songs before looking up Adam Mills' bio. When you do you'll be surprised to find this white, English boy. Dude has serious soul and righteous raps. A.Skillz mashes up traditional old school fuck, electronica that tastes like the 70's but uses ingredients of modern technology to get there. It will be interesting to see where he is scheduled time-wise during LIB because I was feeling an after-lunch dance party with these sounds.
Aaron Snapes is another UK import bringing some crazy house music to Lake Skinner. Snapes grew up in the London scene searching for the sounds that fed his soul. Trance, Garage, drum & bass along with traditional hip-hop are in his original mise en place. Today he just wants to make people dance. He admits he doesn't take it too seriously and by not doing so, he is pumping out beats that just seem to make the whole body want to move. So bring your best body roll to LIB it's going to get a work out for sure. Honestly I'd ove to wake up to this, do some dancing with a coffee style in hand...like I'm doing right now.
Acid Pauli mixes up mostly chill, mellow electronica. I was left on my own with this German artist as even his website doesn't contain any bio material. Thankfully there is a lot of his music on Spotify so you can get a feel for this musician. There's some sound experimentation that goes on in certain tracks. I always like an artist willing to work outside the box, well at least if they can find the right combinations. The mixing of different textures and tempos within the same recording is really interesting. "Farewell Fred" I heard the coffee perking, reading your horoscope before moving on to the crossword puzzle after the coffee is poured, tapping the pencil on the table...a great morning song. I could do late afternoon writing, editting or napping to this music.
Tomorrow I'll review Andreilien, Black 22s and Blackbird Blackbird
Check out everything LIB at http://lightninginabottle.org/ and http://thedolab.com/ All these great folks can also be found on Facebook and Twitter so friend them and follow them. Hope to see you all in Temecula in July.

Keys and Feathers
At the opening of Hans and Bill Haveron's first father-son show, the Kirk Hopper Gallery offered up a back wall to Hans for one of his famous "live paintings. With the show's theme of Raven's Riddle still influencing his muses, the younger Haveron "feather bombed" with wall with an 8' high by 20' long feather which he painted within a one hour time limit he imposed on himself.
Bill shared this photo with me which was taken by
John F Ladd. The first thing I noticed was yet another completed "key circle". As any of you who have read The Tribes from its beginnings knows, Hans is the original source of Sepia's key. The painting "Sepia's Secret" has resulted in various representations of the key as a tattoo, jewelry and in graphic designs. The evening of this painting session, Hans chose to wear the key fashioned for him by Shannon Shiang who has also created a special version of the key pendant for Adam Lambert to compliment his tattoo. Adam owns the original painting of "Sepia's Secret".

Lucent Dossier - A Faerie Tale for the New Era
Somewhere between 2004 and May of 2006 I learned of the existence of a band called Panic! At The Disco. These teenagers from Las Vegas had a unique sound. So unique that they not only didn't fit any genre, their album "A Fever You Can Sweat Out" was actually two parts with the first having more of a steam-punky feel and the second part being a little contemporary pop but more complex. Their lyrics were well beyond their years due to Ryan Ross's inspiration from his roller coaster life. When it came time to create a video for their first single "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" someone on their artistic team had the brilliance to pair director Shane Drake with the burlesque cirque troupe, Lucent Dossier. The resulting video is still brilliant today
The beauty and talent of this group intrigued the hell out of me. I watched many a video and TV performance of Panic! At The Disco just to see these magical creatures. Some times sultry, some times silly, always costumed to catch the eye, Lucent Dossier was the perfect addition to the band's live performances. When they did their international arena tour "Nothing Rhymes with Circus", Lucent provided more of its members. It was awesome.
Panic! changed everything up with their sophomore album so I didn't get my dose of Lucent Dossier from them any more. But then I saw an announcement they were going to be part of The Scream Awards. They got their own episode of Top Chef-Just Desserts. Every so often I would seen them. I also scoured the internet to find out if they would ever perform in my part of the world...to no avail. Until this past Fall when they were signed as artists in residence at The Liberty Theater in Manhattan.
The name of the show was The Lucent Encounter. I was there for opening night and what an encounter it was. Besides all the interactive dancing, acrobatics, vaudeville sketches and live mannequin vignettes happening all around me, I was introduced to members of the troupe include one of the costumers. I saw the results of friend Hans Haveron's airbrush make-up skills. It was possibly the most magical night of my life to that point.
My feature article on Lucent Dossier has been published in the latest issue of FourCulture magazine. I got to spend almost an hour with Linda Borini in a small sandwich shop just off Columbus Circle one evening and hear her story of becoming part of Lucent Dossier. She also helped me to finally put the finger on the biggest difference between the New York and SoCal arts scenes and why I had not been able to find a real East Coast tribe to this point. Then I connected with Dream Rockwell, founder of the troupe. She had performed that night in New York. I knew she was there because we had texted while the goon squad outside was giving me shit about letting me in. Hans had told me about doing her make-up but we never got any face-time. However, even with a lot of miles between us, we had a major connection in that phone conversation. I won't even call it an interview because we began building a friendship from the very first words. By the end we had discovered yet another spirit sister on this crazy journey.
Dream gave me treasures that night that opened my eyes and will help me on my quest. 1) Find the point on your arrow. The compass needle can't help much if its not giving you a definitive direction. Find the point. 2) claim the freedom you were born with to be your genuine self. Once you do that you will be truly happy, joyful, at peace. 3) People who are sincerely happy individuals scare the crap out of people trying to follow some social model that they have been taught is "proper". Taking it another step from my own meditation....free thinkers and doers are what will shine the light on the dark creatures that have been controlling humanity for too long. That light will reveal them for the humbugs they are and destroy their "power". Be brave. Be bold. Be you no matter how eccentric, eclectic, outrageous or just plain weird you are.
This summer I will get to spend four whole days with the fae of Lucent Dossier at Lake Skinner in Temcula, CA. Lightning In A Bottle was the point on Dream's arrow and Lucent is a staple of the festival. I am so excited to experience them once again but this time in their native habitat. I can only imagine that it will be a faerie tale come to life.
We are the dreams
Tangled in your catcher
When you rise from sleep
The beautiful ones
The ones you will carefully
Break the strings to release
Setting us free to play
We'll dance on your bed
And fly through your hair
We sing the songs
That spark your imagination
We give you the colors
To paint your story
We are the faerie tales
Come to life.
